Blog Comment Spam

In spite of using word verification, I’ve noticed an increasing amount of blog comment spam on both my blogs lately, which is beginning to seriously annoy me. An extra problem is that my email account sometimes does sort these as spam, which means they might slip me by.

Is that just me this is happening to or is it the same for everyone?

I’m considering switching to comment moderation for a while to try out how that works for me (and my readers).

If you have any opinions, please tell me.

Hmmm...yes, I have noticed what looks like spam on several other blogs that I follow, as well! It seems to be happening more often. I guess I will be getting some shortly. Comment moderation is not quite my cup of tea, but that's just from a commenter's viewpoint. It's only that you can't actually see your comment afterwards, check it out, and have a chance to change or delete it. But it may be helpful to you. Although you would still get the spam in your e-mail then, I think?

I like comment moderation! (I have not seen any spam lately.) It allows me to forgo the word verification and still see who is commenting on what.

Ginny, I agree with you, I'm hesitating about comment moderation for that very reason. When I comment on someone else's blog I too prefer it if I can see the comment published directly.

The problem is not that I get the spam in my email, it's the other way round. The spam filter in my email is more effective than Blogger at keeping spam at bay.

For now I'm making a compromise and setting comment moderation on posts older than 2 days.

no spam for me, use what ever helps you and i will still comment. i have no preference and until i get spam, will not know what i would do. i have seen them on a couple of blogs, but not mine. I love to read, but not discuss what i read. I read 100 percent to escape into another world. the only thing i do is ask friends if they have read they latest David Balducci or they will ask me. but for actual discussion, I have never done that. I know a lot of people that do and love it. I also see reviews on line and in news papers. so you should find people who want to discuss with you on blogs.

For some obscure reason I missed this post. Very odd. I only use comment moderation on posts over a couple of weeks old so that when I'm not looking at my 'other' blog when I'm on the opposite side of the globe I don't miss a comment inadvertantly.

I do like to be able to see what people are saying before I make a comment.

Yes GB I agree with that - I also like it (at other people's blogs) when I can see what comments have already dropped in - as well as being able to check my own comment after I've posted it. The thing is it happened to me a few times that I also got spam not only on new posts but also on older posts, so that's why I've been experimenting a bit with time limits how long to leave commenting open without moderation. I think maybe I'll go back to one week though, I think that caused less problems for my regular readers.
