BTT: First Love

http://btt2.wordpress.com/2010/08/05/first-time/

What is the first book you remember reading?
What about the first that made you really love reading?

I think with me learning to read was a gradual process rather than a sudden experience. Actually there was a very similar BTT question a few months ago. Here is the answer I gave to that one.  Before I could read myself, my mum used to read to me. I'm not sure when she ceased to do that, either. My brother is some years younger than me. By the time he was old enough to listen to proper stories, I would have been old enough to read my own. (Probably read to him, too, sometimes.)

I can't say there was one particular book or author that made me love reading either. There were a few that I loved enough to still have them on my shelves, though. Among those, The Borrowers by Mary Norton (the first four books). I reread them as late as last year, for the first time in English (and including a fifth, later book that I did not know of). If you like, read the review that I wrote here back in December 2009.

That looks like a lovely edition of The Borrowers. It's always been one of my favorite children's books, although I didn't read it until I was in college. I still want to read the later books some day.

I remember reading that book!

I was hooked on Enid Blyton. She, in a way, has influenced my interest in Crime fiction.

Here is my BTT: First Time post!

It is interesting how everyones mind works when we have to think about the first book that got us hooked on reading. I am almost 70 years old and I remembered like it was yesterday. Funny how our brains work, just like a little computer!

my first book was a very large and heavy Bible Story Book, all the well know stories from the Bible. after that I was hooked and started reading whatever i could find. mother took me to the library and I fell in love with the Tarzan series and another one like it called Bomba, i went from those to all things Western.

Well, I do not remember your previous post on Pippi Longstocking, it's a good thing you gave the link to it! Maybe it was a day that you posted twice and I missed it. Like you, I started school at 7. And I started with first grade, no kindergarden. I had trouble learning to read at first, but when I did learn there was no stopping me! When I was a new wife and mom I read a book a day for years. I don't know how I managed the time to do that! I can't really think of any one book in particular. But I do remember as a child growing up I would have to bring a book to the dinner table. I was apparently unable to eat without my current book being by my plate so I could both read and eat. My mom did not like this, and frowned upon it. Not good table manners!!

My elementary teacher read the class, A Wrinkle in Time. It captivated me. (The book was new that year.) ;-)
