Quotation of the Week 43/09 - Acts of kindness

Acts of kindness, like breadcrumbs in a fairytale forest
Lead us past dangers as light melts the darkness

...
Acts of kindness, like rain in a draught,
release the spirit with a whoop and a shout.

From the song I don't believe by Paul Simon (Surprise, 2006)

During the last week I have been in mood for this CD, Paul Simon's Surprise, and played it several times. By now faithful readers of this blog know that I'm a Paul Simon fan ever since my teens. I have quoted other lyrics of his previously, I think even from this album. Today, listening again, it was the words above that "popped out" to me. However, the lyrics in full are also worth pondering over. The song is entitled I don't believe. Much too often when someone utters those words, we kind of take for granted that we understand what that means. Instead of taking the trouble to ask: What exactly is it that you don't believe?

Wish that Simon and Garfunkel were still together - like a bridge over troubled water i can hear over and over again! Haven't kept up with Paul Simon lately...

Jeannette, I have their Old Friends concert from 2003 on DVD, and I love that - it's heartwarming. I've kept "following" Paul over the years. And the Surprise album is really, really good (in my humble opinion). Both music and lyrics very much to my liking... :)

I remember a professor who said to a student that had just said " I don't believe in God" " Tell me about the God you don't believe in because there is a good chance I don't believe in that God either."

I wore out my LP of Bridge over Troubled Water in 1970. Bought a second one and then an audio tape and then a CD. I suppose I should update that to something else now! It remains my number one album.

Dr John, that is one of the things I had in mind.

Scriptor, I'm with you. I had all Simon & Garfunkel on LP, then tape, now CD. I think I also have all Paul's major solo albums now on CD (not every "best of" or live album though). Bridge Over Troubled Water was the one through which I first got to knew them, so that has remained my "number one" too.And that song one of my favourites all categories.
