it could mean no one he knows will help him, he has to relie on strangers. or what ginny said. not sure, i read it 3 times. still not sure. like the contrast of the dead leaves and the colorful tube
I don't really know who William Feather was or what his life was like. But as I interpret the quote, he's saying that when he's been in need of help, the help has come from people he had no reason to expect help from; perhaps a stranger. I think it can also be interpreted as a hint that people he might have had more reason to expect support from, did not give it. To me the quote echos Jesus' parable of the Good Samaritan. (Luke 10) Back in those days, the Jews and the Samaritans were not exactly on speaking terms. (In today's language try inserting Palestinian instead to get the "full force" of that story.)

Well, I'm not quite sure what this means. Is it that help comes from unexpected places, and not people close to him as we would think?

Yes, Monica, that's how I'd interpreted it too. Although it's his experience it's not always been mine.
