I listened to this dialog on NPR (Natl Public Radio) today about Ayn Rand and her belief that we are all inherently selfish; that anything we do in the name of altruism is selfish because it ultimately serves ourself, etc. etc. Can't say I agree or disagree, but your quote made me think of it. :)
